This camping checklist generator builds a packing list around your trip: tent or car, who is coming, how many nights, how cold it will get and what the campsite has. It works out the quantities too. Everything suggested starts ticked, so untick what you will not need and save the rest as a PDF. It is free, needs no signup, and nothing you enter leaves your browser.

How the generator works out quantities
Each quantity on your camping packing list comes from a simple rule, based on the number of people, nights and dogs you enter. The rules are planning estimates for a typical trip, so adjust them for heat, altitude and how active your days will be.
| Item | How it is worked out | Example: 2 adults, 3 nights |
|---|---|---|
| Drinking and cooking water (dispersed sites) | About 1 gallon per person per day, plus extra for dogs | 8 gallons |
| Socks | One pair per night, plus one, for each person | 4 pairs each |
| Stove fuel | About one canister per three nights, plus a spare | 2 canisters |
| Firewood | One to two bundles per evening | 3–6 bundles |
| Meals | Breakfast, lunch and dinner for each night | 9 meals |
| Sleeping bags, pads, headlamps, chairs | One per person | 2 of each |

What changes with the overnight low
Temperature changes your list more than any other setting. Most cold nights come from the ground, not the air, so the pad matters as much as the bag.
| Overnight low | Sleeping bag | Sleeping pad | Add to your clothing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Above 60°F (16°C) | Bag or quilt rated near the low | Any foam or air pad | A light fleece for the evening |
| 40–60°F (4–16°C) | Rated about 10°F below the low | Foam or air pad | Warm hat and a mid layer |
| 20–40°F (−7–4°C) | Rated about 10°F below the low | Insulated, R-value 4 or higher | Insulated jacket and gloves |
| Below 20°F (−7°C) | Winter bag, about 10°F below the low | R-value 5+, or two pads stacked | Insulated boots, dry sleep clothes, a hot-water bottle |
For nights near or below freezing, read the winter tent camping guide before you pack.
Campground or dispersed site: what gets added
A developed campground usually has a water tap, toilets and a picnic table. A dispersed site has none of them, so for a dispersed camping checklist the generator adds:
- Water for the whole trip, plus a filter or treatment tablets. The CDC calls boiling the most reliable way to treat water, with filtering and then disinfecting as the next best option.
- Food storage that meets local wildlife rules, such as a bear canister or locker where the area requires one. The National Park Service explains how to store food in bear country.
- A trowel and sealable bags, so human waste and toilet paper are handled the Leave No Trace way.
- A folding table, because there is no picnic table.
- A trip plan left with someone at home: where you are going and when you will be back.
Wherever you camp, buy firewood near the campsite instead of bringing it from home. Moving firewood spreads forest pests to new areas.
Three checks before you load the car
- Pitch the tent once at home. Count the stakes before they go back in the bag. A missing pole section is much easier to fix in the driveway.
- Look at the forecast low the day before you leave and check the temperature step again. A ten-degree drop changes the pad, the bag and the jacket.
- Read the campground rules. Fire bans, pet rules and overnight parking limits change more often than people expect.
One rule applies to every trip: keep fuel-burning gear outside. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns campers never to bring a stove, lantern or candles inside a tent, because of carbon monoxide and fire.
Questions about the camping checklist generator
Is it free?
Yes. There is no account and no email. Your answers and choices are stored only in this browser.
Does the PDF include everything on the list?
No, only the items you leave ticked. The PDF shows them with empty boxes to tick off while you pack, along with your quantities and the safety notes for your trip.
Will my list still be here later?
On the same phone or computer and browser, yes. Open the page again and your list loads as you left it. Clearing your browser data removes it.
Can I share the list with my group?
Use the Share button. The link opens the same trip settings on another device, so everyone starts from the same list.
Does it work for backpacking or RV trips?
It is built for tent camping and car camping, where weight is not the main limit. Backpacking needs a lighter, weight-first list, and RV trips need hookup and vehicle gear that this tool does not cover.
